Nigeria Second Lagos Fashion Week

Nigeria's biggest city from Wednesday hosts the 2nd Lagos Fashion Week, which organisers say will showcase local design talent and put in a splash of colour in the region often viewed as troubled.

"There's plenty of negativity about Africa generally speaking and Nigeria particularly," Penny McDonald, md of Arise Media, that is organising the wedding, told AFP about the eve from the opening day.

"Everything in news reports is doom and gloom, from famine to bombings, to petrol (price crisis), recently in Nigeria. Hopefully this can redress the imbalance... frankly Africa and Nigeria usually are not broken."

Even though country doesn't boast any high-class stores, Nigerians are well recognized for their flair and passion for fashion.
Africa's most populous country has produced a few of the continent's best known designers, including Frank Osodi and Bridget Awosika, that will showcase their work Wednesday in addition to Britain-based Jamaican Romero Bryan.

McDonald said the amount of designers increased to 77 from 50 next year, a rise she attributes towards the success from the inaugural show. Two huge tents are already erected because of a five-star hotel to host the shows, and specialist decorators are already flown in from Europe. Some of the best African names exposing their collections through the week include British-Ghanaian Oswald Boateng and also the internationally renowned South African duo Kluk CGDT. The show runs through Sunday.
